THE ISSUE REGARDING CUBA IS FREEDOM vs. TYRANNY

Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) issued the following statement today in response to the ongoing efforts by the Clinton National Security Council and its accomplices in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and elsewhere to pressure Congress to unilaterally lift sanctions against the Cuban dictatorship despite the ongoing crackdown against the internal opposition by Castro:

• Those who fail to understand that the Cuban people will inevitably be free, and who assume that the dictatorship will survive, are making a serious and costly mistake.
• Its very simple, the Cuban people, once they are free, will not do business with those who collaborated with the dictatorship which oppressed them.
• The smart as well as the ethical thing to do is to wait and do business with Cuba when it is free, NOT to do business with the jailers of the political prisoners who will be the future leaders of a democratic Cuba.
• Specifically with regard to the issue of agriculture, we support the sale and financing of agricultural products with Cuba, subject to:

a. The liberation of all political prisoners;
b. The legalization of all political parties, independent labor unions and the independent press; and
c. The scheduling of free and fair, internationally supervised elections.

• All supporters of freedom should join us in demanding those three fundamentally fair conditions for the Cuban people and work with us in developing a great agricultural sale and financing plan to a free and democratic Cuba.
• Current U.S. law authorizes and contemplates sales under those conditions.
• The overwhelming majority of the Cuban people and the internal opposition, including the dissident leaders who recently concluded a 40-day hunger strike to mark the 40 years of oppression in Cuba, insist upon these three conditions.
• U.S. Agriculture makes a critical mistake in taking steps which may be perceived as contributing to the perpetuation of the Cuban tyranny, something that runs counter to the national and security interests of the United States and will ultimately hurt the interests of the American agricultural community.
• U.S. Agriculture must not exacerbate the difficult situation of the American farmer by authorizing a terrorist dictatorship to export to the U.S. the vast array of crops, including tobacco, rice, sugar and citrus, which would become exportable by Castro to the U.S.
• The only country currently facing U.S. sanctions which, if we ended our embargo, could dump agricultural products on the U.S. market to further hurt the American farmer, is Castro's Cuba. Con Respecto a Cuba el Tema es la Libertad Contra la  Tiranía

Washington, D.C.-- El Congresista Lincoln Díaz-Balart (R-FL) y la Congresista Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) hicieron pública hoy la siguiente declaración en respuesta a los continuos esfuerzos por parte del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional de la Administración Clinton y sus cómplices en la Cámara de Comercio de Estados Unidos, entre otros, para presionar al Congreso para que levante unilateralmente las sanciones contra la tiranía cubana a pesar de la intensa represión contra la oposición interna por Castro:

·      Los que no entienden que el pueblo cubano inevitablemente será libre, y que consideran que la tiranía sobrevivirá, están cometiendo un serio y caro error.

·      Es muy sencillo, el pueblo de Cuba, cuando sea libre, no va a comerciar con aquellos que colaboraron con la tiranía que los oprimió.

·      Lo inteligente así como lo ético es esperar y comerciar con Cuba una vez que sea libre; NO comerciar con los carceleros de los presos políticos que serán los futuros líderes de la Cuba democrática.

·      Específicamente con respecto al tema de la agricultura, nosotros apoyamos la venta y el financiamiento de productos agrícolas con Cuba sujetos a:

a.  La liberación de todos los presos políticos;

b.  La legalización de todos los partidos políticos, los sindicatos obreros y la prensa independiente; y

c.   La convocatoria de elecciones libres con supervisión internacional.

·      Todos los que apoyan a la libertad deben unirse a nosotros en exigir esas tres condiciones justas y fundamentales para el pueblo cubano y trabajar con nosotros para desarrollar un gran plan de venta y financiamiento de productos agrícolas a Cuba libre y democrática.

·      La ley actual de Estadas Unidos permite y contempla dichas ventas bajo esas condiciones.

·      La extraordinaria mayoría del pueblo cubano y de la oposición interna cubana, incluyendo los líderes de la disidencia que hace poco concluyeron una huelga de hambre de 40 días en conmemoración de los 40 años de opresión, insisten en estas tres condiciones.

·      La comunidad agrícola de Estados Unidos no debe tomar pasos que contribuyan a la perpetuación de la tiranía cubana, algo que agrede al interés nacional y la seguridad de Estados Unidos y que dañará los intereses de la comunidad agrícola norteamericana.

·      La comunidad agrícola de Estados Unidos no debe exacerbar la difícil situación de los granjeros americanos, autorizando la exportación a Estados Unidos por un estado terrorista de la gran cantidad de productos agrícolas, como el azúcar, el arroz, el tabaco y los cítricos, que Castro podría exportar a Estados Unidos.

·      El único país que actualmente tiene sanciones económicas de Estados Unidos y que pudiera, Si levantáramos nuestro embargo, enviar grandes cantidades de productos agrícolas a Estados Unidos, perjudicando al granjero americano a través de prácticas de ‘dumping”, es la Cuba de Castro.
