Mass Meeting "Justice For Elian"
Prompted
by the recent statements of US Attorney General Miss Janet Reno, and of
the expressed intent of President Clinton's administration to ignore the
individual rights of the young Cuban refugee rafter Elián González, Unidad
Cubana, an umbrella group of organizations opposing Fidel Castro's
communist government, wishes to make the following statements, addressed
to the American people and to our brothers throughout Latin America:
l.-
That we maintain our resolve to help the child Elián with all the means
at our disposal, in order to prevent the helpless little rafter from
being delivered to the tyrant Fidel Castro, who has never cared the
slightest for the children of our homeland.
2.-
That the Cuban exile community -- which has been credited in no small
measure for the economic growth of the State of Florida – shall remain
alert to prevent Ms Reno's marshals from cruelly and irresponsibly
snatching little Elián from the arms of his relatives in his Little
Havana home.
3.-
That we, as well as our fellow Americans and our Central and South
America brothers and sisters, and the rest of the Cuban exile community,
continue to believe that the child Elián must be allowed to exercise
his inalienable right to have his day in Court, so that he may express
through his relatives and legal representatives, his desire to remain in
the United States and enjoy a life of freedom, without fear or
government threats. If Elián has said so in front of millions of TV
viewers, he has a right to speak up for himself before a court of
justice empowered to determine his situation as a refugee.
4.-
That we shall continue to exercise our right to protest in order to
accomplish these altruistic ends for the benefit of a helpless little
boy whom the Cuban and US governments, pursuant to decisions made in the
course of secret deals, seek to use as a political puppet, with no
regard for the Laws of God and man.
5.-
That, in view of all the above, Unidad
Cubana, jointly with all the Cuban exile organizations, calls on
each and every conscientious member of this community to attend the
Great Mass Rally "Justice for Elian," which will take place
this coming Monday, April 10, at 8:00 PM, at the intersection of N.W.
22nd Avenue and N.W. 2nd Street, near Elián's Little Havana home.

Con motivo de
las recientes declaraciones de la Secretaria de Justicia, Srta Janet
Reno, y de la manifiesta intención del gobierno del Presidente Bill
Clinton de ignorar los derechos individuales que asisten al balserito
refugiado Elián González, la Unidad
Cubana, gran sombrilla
de organizaciones de oposición al gobierno comunista de Fidel Castro,
hace los siguientes pronunciamientos para conocimiento de todo el pueblo
americano y de nuestros hermanos de Latinoamérica:
l.- Que
mantenemos nuestra resolución de ayudar al niño Elián con todos los
medios a nuestro alcance para evitar que el balserito sea entregado
atado de pies y manos al tirano Fidel Castro, quien jamás ha sentido
preocupación alguna por la infancia de nuestra patria.
2.- Que el
pueblo de Cuba en el Exilio, responsable en gran medida del
florecimiento económico del Estado de la Florida, se mantendrá alerta
para evitar que -- de una manera cruel e irresponsable -- alguaciles de
la Srta Reno vayan a cometer el error de utilizar el arrebato y la
fuerza para sustraer al pequeño Elián de los brazos de su familia en
su casa de la Pequeña Habana.
3. Que
continuamos pensando, conjuntamente con nuestros compatriotas
norteamericanos, con nuestros hermanos de Centro y Sur América, y de
los cubanos exiliados, que al niño Elián debe permitírsele ejercer el
derecho inalienable de tener su "día en corte" para poder
expresar a traves de sus representantes y familiares, así como en su
propia voz, su deseo de permanecer en los Estados Unidos disfiutando de
una existencia de libertad y albedrío, exenta de temores y amenazas
oficialistas. Si el niño Elián así lo ha manifestado ante millones de
televidentes, debe tener el derecho a decirlo por sí mismo ante una
corte que determine su situación como refugiado, conforme a lo que
dictaminen los tribunales de familia de los Estados Unidos.
4.- Que
continuaremos ejerciendo nuestra protesta cívica para la consecución
de estos altruistas fines en beneficio de una indefensa criatura que los
gobiernos de Cuba y Estados Unidos, esgrimiendo resoluciones alcanzadas
en pactos secretos, han pretendido utilizar como una marioneta política,
con desconocimiento absoluto de las Leyes de Dios y de los hombres.
5.- Que en vista
de todo lo expuesto, la Unidad
Cubana, conjuntamente
con la totalidad de las organizaciones del Exilio, convoca a la Gran
Concentración "Justicia para Elián" que se llevará a efecto
a las ocho de la noche de éste lunes día 10 de Abril, en el cruce de
la Avenida 22 del N.W. y la Calle 2, en las cercanías de la residencia
de Elián.
