COVERING
CUBA: The New Generation is a complement to my 1995
documentary COVERING CUBA. CC2
is intended for the American audience as a way to convey to them the
information that I believe has been denied them.
Since
COVERING CUBA, censorship by the U.S. media of the reality of
Cuba’s last 42 years has not been lifted. During the events of the
Elián González’s case, Cuban Americans were insulted, derided and
maligned by an increasingly insensitive and hostile press.
Cuban
Americans are not as they are portrayed by the press, apparently
sanctioned by the Clinton Administration, and the liberal
establishment epitomized by The New York Times and The Washington
Post.
CC2
gives the opportunity to the new generation of Cuban Americans born in
the U.S., to express their opinions about the latest developments
about Cuba and the way the U.S. media has covered them.
CC2
discusses:
-
the
story of the 12 children and 41 adults killed during the July 13,
1994 tugboat incident
-
the
Brothers to the Rescue incident of February 24, 1996 where three
U.S. citizens and one resident were killed
-
the
April 14, 2000 attack of U.S. citizens by Castro’s
"diplomats" on U.S. soil outside the Cuban Interests
Section in Washington, D.C
-
U.S.
media coverage as described by 16 young U.S. citizens from Cuban
American families with their criticism of important and
influential reporters and media personalities as well as the
Clinton Administration
As
with the original COVERING CUBA, CC2
is intended to be a tool to bypass the wall of censorship of the U.S.
media that prevents the average American citizen from learning and
understanding why Cuban Americans act the way they do in their quest
for freedom and democracy for their homeland. This new generation of
Cuban Americans displays the same drive, will and desire for freedom
for Cuba as their parents and grandparents. They are taking the torch.
